Sherlock Holmes is a fictional private detective created by British author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. He is widely known as a "consulting detective" in the stories, exhibiting exceptional skills in observation, forensic science, and logical reasoning. These extraordinary talents enable him to handle investigations for diverse clientele, including Scotland Yard.

First introduced in 1887 (in A Study in Scarlet), Holmes gained extensive popularity through a series of short stories published in The Strand Magazine, starting with "A Scandal in Bohemia" in 1891. More tales followed until 1927, resulting in four novels and 56 short stories. The majority of these narratives are set in the Victorian or Edwardian eras, which take place between approximately 1880 and 1914. Most stories are told from the perspective of Holmes's close friend and biographer, Dr. Watson. Watson often accompanies Holmes during his investigations and shares living quarters with him at 221B Baker Street, London—a frequent starting point for many of their adventures.

Sherlock Holmes, although not the first fictional detective, is undeniably one of the most prominent figures in literature. Guinness World Records recognizes him as the "most portrayed movie character" in history. His popularity is so immense that many individuals have mistakenly believed him to be a real person rather than a character of fiction. This misconception has led to the establishment of various literary and fan societies professing his existence. Considered a national symbol of British culture, the character and stories have left an indelible mark on mystery writing and popular culture as a whole. Over the past century, the original works, along with numerous adaptations by authors other than Conan Doyle, have been brought to life on stage, radio plays, television, films, video games, and other forms of media.
